  • Liverpool vs Southampton – Jurgen Klopp's men look to retain the top spot

Liverpool stole the win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday thanks to a bizarre own goal from Toby Alderweireld at the death of the game at Anfield. It was a massive goal which kept the Reds in contention for the Premier League silverware.

Jurgen klopp’s men are still behind defending champions Manchester City, though, and can’t afford any more slip-ups in six remaining rounds. They travel to the south of the country to play Southampton in the first fixture of Matchday No 33 on Friday evening at St Mary’s Stadium.

It will be a serious challenge for Liverpool as they go up against an in-form opposition. The Saints head into the clash high on confidence after winning two on the spin in the league. They stunned Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at home before beating Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 away at The AMEX after the international break last weekend.

Liverpool have a positive head to head record against the Saints historically.

The Reds also won last three H2H affairs with Southampton and they go into this unbeaten in past four meetings with the Saints.

Southampton failed to find the back of the net at all in last four encounters against the Reds.

None of last seven H2H outings saw goals scored at both ends.

A pair of wins in last two rounds moved Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men five points clear off the red zone line. It will likely prove out to be a decisive run for the Saints who also have a couple of winnable home fixtures remaining by the end of the campaign.

Liverpool are obviously massive favourites to come on top in this clash. They won four on the spin across competitions, a streak which includes a 1-3 away victory over Bayern Munich in the reverse fixture of the Champions League Round16 tie.

Sadio Mane was the standout performer for Liverpool in recent weeks. He notched six goals in last five appearances.
