Two franchises who both threw away some very dominant positions in their fifth match of the season are sure to provide plenty of entertainment in Mohali on Monday, with both sides in the thick of a logjam on the IPL table.
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) buckled against the might of Chennai’s spin arsenal, falling considerably short of what seemed a relatively easy chase of 161. KL Rahul’s and Sarfaraz Khan’s scores of 55 & 67 don’t tell the true story: at one stage the partnership could rustle together just 28 runs from 35 balls in the back end of the innings and failed to find the boundary for six overs.
Scoring against spin will be crucial once again as they face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), with Rashid Khan (2019 economy rate 6.00) and Mohammad Nabi (3.75) often enjoying miserly T20 spells even on an off-day.
SRH failed to complete an even smaller chase in their last fixture (137), skittled by Alzarri Joseph’s record-breaking spell. But all things considered, three scores of 180+ (the only franchise alongside KKR to do so) in this tournament gives them the batting form for long-term success.
The visitors enjoy an overall H2H record of 9-3 against KXIP, which includes seven wins from the last eight fixtures and four of the last five in Mohali. In fact, KXIP’s 2018 victory at this venue snapped a seven-game losing streak against the men in orange.
KXIP vs SRH T20 – Expected Playing XI
Kings XI Punjab: KL Rahul (wk), Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Sam Curran, Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Murugan Ashwin, Andrew Tye, Mohammed Shami.

KXIP vs SRH T20 – Fantasy Players To Watch Out For
Chris Gayle (KXIP) has compiled 235 runs (avg 78.33, S/R 163.19) from his last four innings against SRH, including 11 sixes in one 2018 knock in Mohali.
Jonny Bairstow (SRH) failed to pass 30 runs on Saturday for the first time this campaign, but two man of the match awards in 2019 suggests that innings is likely to be a mere blip.
The average powerplay score at the PCA Stadium this year is 50.8 (all-time average 47.6). The hosts are managing just 44.2 runs per powerplay (third-lowest), while SRH lead the league with an average 56.6 runs.
KXIP’s 42.86% win rate as an outsider at home (18 from 42) is the third-poorest of all 2019 franchises. SRH have won seven of nine matches against KXIP when losing the toss, and six of seven when batting first.
